CRIME NEWS

  • Gary Day (40) waived extradition Thursday in Sarpy County, Nebraska and faces charges in Wisconsin and Arkansas for kidnapping a pregnant teen from Beaver Dam. He pleaded not guilty last Friday to misdemeanor charges in Sarpy County and is expected to return to court on April 24.  WMTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 8 and 9, the Day of the Badger fundraiser raised over $1.7 million from 4,411 donors and brought the campaign total to $10.2 million. Organizers say the funds will support the greatest needs on the UW-Madison campus.  WMTV
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison engineering students are hosting the free Engineering EXPO 2025 at the Engineering Campus (1415 Engineering Drive) to celebrate 85 years with space-themed exhibits, live demos and lab tours. Schools Day is held today (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) for invited groups and the public will join on Saturday, April 12 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.).  WKOW
  • University officials said at least 40 student visas were canceled in the UW System as of April 10, including six current students and seven alumni at UW-Madison—this number has doubled since April 7. Sara McKinnon from UW-Madison described the situation as unprecedented—more than 600 student visas have been revoked nationwide.  WMTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than 2,000 volunteers will join the Annual Midwest Crane Count this Saturday to gather data on sandhill and whooping cranes at local wetlands—an effort led by the International Crane Foundation based in Baraboo. Local coordinators in over 60 counties will guide volunteers as they record observations to track population trends and monitor threats like avian influenza.  Wisconsin Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bipartisan bill would expand housing tax credits for rural developments by directing WHEDA to give 35 percent of its annual credits to these projects and easing financing rules—lawmakers said the measure targets the state’s key housing shortage. Lawmakers also plan to raise available tax credit funding to up to $100 million under Gov. Tony Evers’ budget proposal—efforts that could help support more affordable housing projects in rural areas.  Wisconsin Public Radio
  • A bipartisan group of state legislators is moving a tax incentive measure to keep a large employer in Middleton—approved by both an Assembly local government committee and a Senate committee—and the bill may soon head to full Legislature review. Middleton Mayor Emily Kuhn said the incentive aims to preserve 1,800 jobs and avoid an $8 million annual economic loss, with talks ongoing under a non-disclosure agreement.  Isthmus

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health showed that a new AI tool flagged patients at risk of opioid misuse and reduced hospital readmissions by 47 percent, according to a clinical trial. The tool now uses patient health records to alert providers—helping them offer addiction consultations to underserved patients and those with late-identified risks.  Wisconsin Public Radio
