- ➤ On Wednesday, Dane County volunteers built 40 twin beds for children aged 3 to 17 in a community build—helping ease bedlessness for about 1,300 local kids. The group worked for about three hours, with local partners providing supplies—aiming to reach a goal of 365 beds by year’s end. FOX 47
- ➤ Memorial Union Terrace will kick off its Summer by the Lake season on April 16 with the return of its yellow, green and orange chairs. The Wisconsin Union will host a Chair Return Party on April 18 (3-6 p.m.) featuring live performances by DJ Margaux and the University of Wisconsin Marching Band. WMTV

- ➤ James Barnes-Morris, 25, was charged with killing his ex-girlfriend Brooke Strattan, 24, after her body was found in a pond on Near West Side on Oct. 3—he agreed on Thursday to delay his hearing until he gets a lawyer—after a judge warned that going without one could hurt his case. - ➤ Madison police arrested 37-year-old Janelle Hill on a warrant for reckless homicide after she missed her Zoom court appearance on Wednesday following allegations she delivered drugs to an inmate who died from an overdose in June 2022—she is held at Dane County Jail per Dodge County's request. - ➤ State investigators found that during a surprise inspection on Feb. 5, unlicensed employees at Ridglan Farms performed cherry-eye removal surgeries without proper anesthesia or aftercare—raising concerns of animal abuse. In response, the Veterinary Examining Board imposed restrictions on these surgeries, and several customers have already stopped doing business with the facility while legal reviews continue. Isthmus
- ➤ Beaver Dam teenager Sophia Martha Franklin, who went missing on Feb 2, was found safe after a tip led to her sighting near Omaha—her alleged abductor Gary Day was arrested and faces charges for child enticement and abduction. FOX 47
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two orphaned bobkittens from Verona were released into Blue Mounds Wildlife Area on March 26 after spending seven months at the Dane County Humane Society Wildlife Center, where they were treated for dehydration and malnutrition. The center watched the young bobcats play and hunt in their enclosure—helping them learn the skills needed for survival in the wild. WKOW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Capital Area Regional Planning Commission received a $187,500 Pre-Disaster Flood Resilience Grant from Wisconsin Emergency Management to help Dane County communities improve flood defenses. The agency began a pilot project in 2024 assessing 67 crossings in Cottage Grove, Deerfield, Medina, and Sun Prairie and will expand it to additional townships and watersheds—making it easier to spot at-risk drainage areas. - ➤ Between October 1, 2024 and March 31, the City of Madison recorded 553 snow removal complaints down from 866 last winter, and its Building Inspection Division issued 182 fines compared to 325 the previous winter. The drop in complaints and fines came as snowfall fell to 22.1 inches (more than 15 inches less than the previous winter). City of Madison
