- ➤ EXPO— a housing program run by formerly incarcerated people—gives women in Madison a chance to rebuild their lives after prison. Deandrea Hardman, who left jail four months ago, said the support has helped her feel strong, and the program will open a new house in June to help more women. WMTV
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters responded after a lightning strike ignited part of a west Madison apartment complex on the 9400 block of Modern Point Lane Wednesday morning around 8:30 a.m.—the strike damaged the roof, soffit and siding, led to a power outage that trapped one person in an elevator, and prompted property managers to arrange alternate shelter until repairs begin. - ➤ Prospective UW grad students received revised offers that no longer guarantee paid tuition and a stipend as federal funding delays left available lab spots limited. One genetics applicant said her offer was revised on March 3—forcing her to find a faculty sponsor—and she is now rethinking her graduate school plans. Wisconsin Public Radio
- ➤ At Monday's school board meeting, many parents from Lapham Elementary voiced opposition to the district’s staffing allocation process that would cut a beloved second grade teacher and two special education assistants while raising class sizes to 27 students. Union leaders walked out Wednesday to protest the changes as district officials said the shifts (an increase of 8.67 full-time equivalents district-wide) are meant to match staff with enrollment and future needs. - ➤ Supervisor Elizabeth Doyle announced she will resign from the Dane County Board because she is moving out of District 1 — her last day will be March 31. A special election to replace her will be scheduled by the Dane County Clerk. WISC-TV
- ➤ Wisconsin clerks reported a surge in early voting for the April Supreme Court election with 34,036 ballots cast this past Tuesday—more than twice the count from 2023. When combined with 85,612 absentee ballots, the total is nearly 29,000 more votes than at the same point in the previous race. Wisconsin Public Radio
